Intermodality
Thanks to its geo-strategic location and high-quality infrastructure, Interporto di Trieste offers efficient multimodal transport, combining road, rail, and dockside operations. The group's infrastructure
Interporto di Trieste is configured as a back-port area supporting the maritime terminals of the Port of Trieste and the Port of Monfalcone, offering modern facilities and innovative logistics and intermodal services to national and international transport operators.
Interporto di Trieste covers a total area of 600,000 m², with 120,000 m² of covered space used for the storage of national and foreign goods under HACCP regulations. Of this, 10,000 m² is allocated for industrial production within the International Free Zone at the FREEeste site. Additionally, 180,000 m² of covered area benefits from exemption status, while the logistics and intermodal areas cover 130,000 m² and 50,000 m² respectively, including 80,000 m² and 30,000 m² within the International Free Zone.
The ‘Giacomo Borruso’ Terminal also includes 5,000 m² of administrative and management spaces, housing shipping and transport companies, customs agencies, and service providers supporting operators.
The railway infrastructure, owned by Interporto di Trieste, is present at both terminals as follows:
- Terminal ‘Giacomo Borruso’: 6 tracks, divided into two operational groups of three tracks each, with lengths up to 450 metres
- Terminal ‘FREEeste’: 3 tracks, two of which are up to 450 metres long, and one able to accommodate trains up to 750 metres

The ‘Giacomo Borruso’ Terminal is equipped with two groups of three tracks—located in the yard and on the platform—linked via a dedicated railway siding to the Villa Opicina station. This station is connected to the Port of Trieste and the Sežana station, providing access to Slovenia and Eastern Europe. The company actively promotes various rail transport solutions, including the development of intermodal trains.
The ‘FREEeste’ Terminal features three tracks, two of which are up to 450 metres in length, and one capable of accommodating trains up to 750 metres. This terminal is also directly connected to the railway network, with routes leading to the Port of Trieste, thereby enabling the development of a range of intermodal transport options.
Both sites benefit from direct access to the A4 motorway, which crosses northern Italy, as well as connections to the Slovenian motorway network and the SS202 highway, facilitating transport links to the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
