The impact of the Trieste Interporto on the territory

The evaluation of a company should not be limited exclusively to economic results, but also consider the social, environmental and territorial impacts that are often underestimated or not even known.

In the case of the Trieste Interporto, in addition to the traditional economic indicators, a first piece of data that is certainly relevant concerns the environment. Between 2021 and 2023, thanks to the combined use of the railway and the Autostrade del Mare network using the Fernetti site, approximately 200,000 trucks were taken off the road. This led to a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, estimated at approximately 238,000 tonnes in three years, a considerable contribution to the fight against climate change.

Another important contribution concerns urban traffic: the Interporto manages the arrival of trucks headed to the Port of Trieste, preventing them from flowing into the city. Heavy vehicles can stop in the Fernetti backport area, where they complete customs procedures and await authorization before directly accessing the docks for boarding. This system significantly reduces traffic congestion in the city center.

Energy sustainability is also a priority. Already in 2008 – the first among Italian interports – the Trieste interport installed a photovoltaic system at the Fernetti site on a surface area of 19,000 square meters. The system produces approximately 1.3 million kilowatt hours per year, thus contributing to the transition to renewable energy. Since 2010, an additional 2.5 MW have been installed for a total production of over 4.3 million kilowatt hours per year.

From an economic and employment point of view, the Interporto hosts 47 companies on the Fernetti site that employ a total of approximately 250 workers, including freight forwarders, transporters, commercial operators, staff from the Customs and Monopolies Agency and the Guardia di Finanza.

In Bagnoli, inside the free port, the production site of the multinational BAT now has 260 employees, without considering the induced effects generated at local and national level. The Interporto itself has a staff of 40 people, which has essentially doubled over the last 10 years.

In terms of integration and support for the development of the territory, a significant aspect is represented by the structure of customers and suppliers. There are 261 active suppliers, of which 63% are based in Friuli Venezia Giulia, while 64% of customers are from the regional territory but operate at an international level. This link with the territory strengthens the local economy.

The economic repercussions resulting from the interport activity are also significant: VAT and duties withheld on goods that transit and are cleared through customs at the two locations of the Interporto of Trieste (Fernetti and FREEeste) generate monetary flows for the state and regional treasuries exceeding 240 million euros per year.

The Interporto of Trieste represents a true example of how logistics integrated with industrial transformation can become a driver of sustainable growth for the territory. A reality that, in addition to its strategic role in national and international transport, contributes concretely to the environment, the local economy and the quality of life.

Approval of 2024 budget

The shareholders of Interporto di Trieste SpA have approved the 2024 financial statements, which closed with a pre-tax profit of €634K and a production value of €12.3M, marking the best economic results ever. This is the third consecutive year of double-digit growth achieved despite the difficulties linked to international geopolitical tensions that were also reflected in commercial traffic.

The 2024 results were obtained by moving:

• 408,852 Tons of goods (360,594 in 2023);

• 17,607 TEUs (30,301 in 2023)

• 247 Intermodal and general cargo trains set up (485 in 2023);

• 115,861 Heavy vehicle passages (117,461 in 2023)

The decrease in TEUs handled in 2024 is mainly attributable to the reduction in the number of terminalized trains, due both to the crisis in the automotive sector in Germany and to the prolonged closure of some railway lines in Austria for major maintenance work.

Heavy vehicle traffic decreased by 1.4% compared to the previous year, mainly due to the elimination of vehicles coming from Russia and Belarus.

The centrality of the FREEeste logistics area in Bagnoli was confirmed in 2024 as well, having managed over 64% of the company's total volumes, confirming the validity of the development strategies implemented in recent years.

During the year, the Company implemented its investment plan aimed at improving the services offered, allocating over €2.6 million to the construction of equipped warehouses, new computerized entry gates and the purchase of lifting equipment.

The results of the subsidiary Interporto di Cervignano SpA are also positive, closing the 2024 budget with a production value of €5.3 million and an operating result of €300 thousand. The Interporto di Trieste – says President Paolo Privileggio – is accelerating its growth path, decisively aiming at internationalization by exploiting its strategic position made even more relevant by the changes in the international freight traffic scenarios and by the presence of the Free Port.

Approval of 2022 budget

The shareholders of Interporto di Trieste SpA have approved the 2022 financial statements, which closed with a profit of €369K and a production value of €9.2M. These values have grown significantly compared to the previous year and represent the best result ever for the company despite the negative effects of the war in Ukraine and the continuation, especially in the first part of the year, of the impact of Covid-19 on the global logistics chain.

These results were obtained by moving:

• 360,795 Tons of goods (+ 6.7% compared to 2021);

• 6,358 Containers, 8,270 intermodal units, for a total of 28,572 TEUs;

• 366 Intermodal and general cargo trains set up (349 in 2021);

Heavy vehicle traffic (over 115,000 passages) recorded a decrease of 18.9% compared to the previous year due to the almost zeroing of vehicles coming from Ukraine and the total from Russia and Belarus.

The increase in logistics activities, expressed in tons moved, is the result of the strong increase in movements carried out at the new FREEeste site: for the first time since the acquisition of the area in 2017, the tons moved at the Bagnoli site (54% of the total 360,795 tons) exceeded the volumes of activity managed at the Fernetti terminal.

Still in relation to logistics activities, during the year the relationship and commercial collaboration with the Interporto di Cervignano SpA was strengthened by increasing the volume of rail traffic at the subsidiary's terminal. The company also aims to strengthen its role in the implementation of the Regional Logistics Platform, as well as developing an Interport Network.

Interporto di Trieste has made over 16 million euros of investments in 2022 aimed at improving and modernizing existing structures and making logistics flows more efficient and sustainable, with important benefits for the local industrial system and the road system of the entire territory, also contributing to reducing the environmental impact of transport and logistics activities.

The shareholders of Interporto di Trieste have also approved a capital increase of 6 million euros aimed at further developing intermodality, improving logistics infrastructure and the services offered to local businesses.

Interporto di Trieste – says President Paolo Privileggio – with the management of almost one million square meters of interport structures in the Fernetti, FREEeste and subsidiary Interporto di Cervignano locations, is taking on an increasingly central role in regional logistics and aims to further develop the Free Zone through the industry-logistics combination as occurred with the recent establishment of BAT.
