Interporto Projects
ADRI UP Project
Description
The Adriatic MoS Upgraded Services - "ADRI-UP" project aimed to upgrade port and logistics infrastructure to improve regular water transport logistics services along the Adriatic-Ionian Sea Motorway (MoS) corridor between the ports of Trieste, Ancona in Italy and Igoumenitsa in Western Greece, thus connecting three important Core Network Corridors. The action ran from 01.03.2016 to 20.12.2020 and was co-financed by the European Union - Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), Commission Decision 2015-EU-TM-0310.
Objective
The ADRI-UP project aims to develop the Motorways of the Sea connections in the Adriatic-Ionian context, through infrastructural interventions and the development of projects in the ports of Trieste, Ancona and Igoumenitsa. The Action aims at the development of port and logistics infrastructures in order to enhance the Motorways of the Sea services along the Adriatic-Ionian corridor and in connection with three corridors of the central TEN-T network: Bac, Scan-Med and Orient-East Med. More specifically, the project led by the Port Authority of Igoumenitsa, includes the following actions:
- The construction and development of road connections in the hinterland of Igoumenitsa;
- The definitive and executive design for the upgrading of the railway infrastructures within the port and for the construction of the new Ro-Pax terminal in the port of Ancona;
- The functional and technical restructuring of Pier VI in the port of Trieste;
- The electrification of the internal railway tracks and the extension of the warehouses in the Fernetti hinterland;
Results
The project ended on 20 December 2020 and contributed to the development of the Motorways of the Sea services between Greece and Italy with a view to traffic flows to/from the Eastern Mediterranean countries, with important advantages in terms of reduction of negative externalities and qualitative and quantitative development of logistics connections between ports and their respective hinterlands and of maritime connections between the ports affected by the Action.
FENIX
Description
The Eastern Adriatic Sea Port System Authority acts as Implementing Body for the Italian Ministry of Transport in the framework of the FENIX project - "A European FEderated Network of Information eXchange in Logistics", co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility - CEF, with a total budget of 60,863,464 euros - of which 800,000 euros will be managed by the Port System Authority.
The FENIX consortium, led by ERTICO ITS Europe, includes a wide range of actors from the logistics community: 43 beneficiaries are working on the implementation of innovative actions in 11 pilot sites, covering 9 TEN-T corridors.
Term
The project started in April 2019 and will end in March 2023
Objective
FENIX aims to support the development, validation and deployment of digital information systems along the EU transport core network. It will develop the first European federated architecture for data sharing serving the European logistics community of freight forwarders, logistics service providers, mobility infrastructure providers, cities and authorities, in order to offer interoperability between each existing and future platform. In doing so, the Network will build on the results achieved in other EU-funded projects, in particular AEOLIX (H2020) and CO-GISTICS (CIP).
In particular, the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port System Authority is closely collaborating with public authorities and private operators along the Mediterranean and Baltic-Adriatic TEN-T corridors, as well as the South-Eastern European Motorway of the Sea, to develop standardized and interoperable IT solutions enabling slot tracking and management systems.
PROMARES Project
PROMOTING MARITIME AND MULTIMODAL FREIGHT TRANSPORT IN THE ADRIATIC SEA
The project “PROMARES – Promoting maritime and multimodal freight transport in the Adriatic Sea”, led by the Port System Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, is co-financed by the Italy–Croatia Cross-border Cooperation Programme 2014–2020 (Interreg V-A).
Project Objective
The unbalanced development of multimodal transport options, poor coordination and communication between stakeholders and dry ports, as well as uncoordinated cross-border measures and instruments, hinder the full development of the potential of maritime and multimodal freight transport in the Programme Area.
The aim of the PROMARES project is to enhance maritime and multimodal freight transport, involving all ports generating intermodal and multimodal flows, addressing challenges related to multimodal transport accessibility and network efficiency in the region, from port to hinterland, and improving coordination and cooperation among stakeholders.
Within the PROMARES project, partners will carry out territorial analyses based on common methodologies in order to elaborate a cross-border strategy, also in the field of ICT tools, for the enhancement of maritime and multimodal freight transport. Pilot actions will follow in the Programme Area.

Fer-Net Project
Study for the construction of a customs corridor
Port of Trieste – Interporto of Trieste
Granted contribution: Euro 123,915.79
Fer-Net is a project financed by the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia under the POR-FESR 2014-2020.
Description
Fer-Net is a project aligned with the recent trends that are redefining the concept of the port, extending its scope toward the connected interports and ultimately incorporating them into a broader logistics framework.
Fer-Net aims to develop a new prototype of port extension that will allow the Trieste–Fernetti Interport to operate in full continuity with the Port of Trieste, while preserving its own independent operational capabilities.
Objective
The aim of the Fer-Net project is to enable the Interporto to function as a true port terminal, effectively relocating the entry gates of the Port of Trieste to newly equipped areas within the Interporto. The project also seeks to manage the flow of vehicles travelling along the highway that separates the two sites as if they were still operating within the Port’s jurisdiction.
Results
Fer-Net aims to enhance the efficiency of the Trieste Port system by overcoming the spatial and physical limitations of the territory and port area through technological and process innovation.
The project’s main outcome is the development of a controlled corridor between the Trieste Interporto and the Port, potentially resulting in an extension of the port quay all the way to the Fernetti area.
